Setting the standard

Hi there fellow cake lovers :-)

Thank you for visiting our blog, the new home of all things cake! Have a read of our introductory post to find out more about A Separate Compartment.

We've got some fab posts coming up featuring some amazing cakes and suppliers, but first of all we thought it a good opportunity to talk to you about the benchmark for all of our cake comparisons - the ultimate cakes that despite travelling far and wide, we've never quite managed to beat!

The difficulty is - there are two. And choosing between them is like choosing between your two favourite pets, or Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow, or...well you get the impression!.

If we had to - we're sure it could be done (in fact we may do this one day soon), but for now let's tell you about them both.

Let's be clear - in this post we're talking about the taste sensation and yumminess of these cakes - rather than presentation...we couldn't compare a wedding cake or a delicious looking cupcake to these fail safe desserts! These are the cakes you turn to at any time to pick you up and make the world a nicer place :-)

1. The "ultimate problem solver" - hard days at work, money problems, relationship problems, in fact all of life's problems. The Wetherspoon's Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake, served with ice cream.

Not being ones to discriminate, we've tried just about every other chocolate fudge cake we've came across. The one on offer at Eva Nicole's naming ceremony did indeed come close, but nothing can quite pip the Wetherspoon's special to the post.

The consistency of the topping is perfect, especially when served at just the right temperature. The butterscotch filling is to die for, and the texture of the cake itself? Just light enough to be manageable, yet still rich enough to feel more than satisfied by the end.

Now there does tend to be one particular Wetherspoon's we frequent, and not wanting to let down any of our readers, we realise we'll need to check the quality on offer at other branches to avoid disappointment. Purely for research purposes of course!

2. The "always the answer cake" - girly night in, girly day out, birthday, or just because. The Original Costco Carrot Cake.

A friend with a Costco Card is a friend indeed! But it doesn't have to be bought directly from the source. Cafes and shops that sell this amazing cake by the slice are noted and frequently visited. And it's easy to tell that it is indeed the ultimate, just by looking at it!

When Jordan got married on Easter Saturday, she shared the day with Margaret's birthday. As Chief Bridesmaid, Margaret was over the moon to be presented with a genuine Carrot Cake during the speeches! Not even a fabulous wedding would be complete without!

We could talk forever about why no other Carrot Cake comes close - but that's a whole other post in itself which we promise to address soon!

As we go through our journey of cakeness, we have no doubt that time and time again we'll compare to these two benchmarks of great cake.

We look forward to sharing it with you!
